CEU and Endorsements Information

Continuing Education Units (CEU's)

One CEU is defined as ten clock hours of participation in an accredited and organized continuing education program with qualified instruction. The primary purpose of CEUs is to provide a permanent record of the educational accomplishments of an individual who has completed one or more significant, non-credit coursework.

Endorsements

Endorsements are credits that teachers accumulate to be able to teach subjects other than those for which they were originally certified. The number of credits varies depending on the subject. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction makes teachers responsible for tracking their own endorsements and clock hours.

Note: The State Board of Education (SBE) has adopted a new Endorsement System that took effect on September 1, 2000. To ensure that the courses that you take meet requirements, please call the Superintendent of Public Instruction’s office in Olympia at 360-753- 6773 or visit the Web site: http://www.k12.wa.us/cert/. Any student who is interested in receiving clock hours or CEUs for a course must request CEUs or clock hours in advance and pay an additional $10.00 administrative charge per course or item number. For more information, call 206-870-3785.
